Hoya cutis porcelana *fragrant - mature specimens

Hoya cutis porcelana is a species native to the Philippines, published in 2013 based on material from the islands of Samar and Biliran. Its foliage resembles Hoya camphorifolia and Hoya bicolensis, but the flowers have a porcelain-like appearance that is unusual in the genus. They are small and pearly cream-colored, with a reddish corona, and are fragrant. The name refers to the surface of the flowers, not the leaves. The spelling in the title, without a hyphen, is the commercial form. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth habit. The leaves are opposite, leathery, and glossy on the upper surface. The leaf blade may resemble that of Hoya camphorifolia and Hoya bicolensis; the similarity concerns the foliage, not the flower. It has an epiphytic vine growth habit, with slender stems. Stem length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and star-shaped, with pearly cream-colored lobes and a porcelain-like sheen. The corona is reddish, with a lighter spot in the center. The pedicels may be pink. An umbel usually contains around 8–12 flowers. The fragrance is present; descriptions range from a slightly sweet note to a tangy one. The flowers usually last for several days. The species may flower even on relatively young plants. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The published name is Hoya cutis-porcelana W.Suarez, J.R.Sahagun & Aurigue, 2013.
