Gymnocalycium baldianum, also known as the Chinese flowering cactus, is a globular cactus species native to Argentina, popular for its compact shape, easy care, and spectacular flowers in various shades of red, pink, or violet.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Growth habit: A small cactus with a spherical or slightly flattened body, dark green to bluish-green, with a diameter of 6–10 cmat maturity. It does not develop aggressive spines, making it easy to handle.

• Ribs: It has 8–12 rounded ribs, separated by deep grooves. The areoles are small and evenly spaced.

• Spines: Thin, curved, white-yellowish or gray, non-aggressive, arranged radially around the areoles (4–8 radial spines, with no prominent central spines).

• Flowers: Large, cup-shaped, pink, deep red, violet, or white, appearing in spring or summer from the upper part of the plant. The flowers are sometimes fragrant.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers filtered sunlight or bright indirect light. It can also be kept in direct sunlight, but exposure should be increased gradually to prevent the epidermis from burning.

• Soil: Well-drained, sandy, or rocky. A substrate for cacti and succulents, amended with perlite or gravel, is recommended.

• Watering: Minimal. Water only when the substrate is completely dry. Stop watering completely during the cold season, especially if the plant is kept in a cool place.

• Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures. It can tolerate low temperatures (even close to 0°C) if kept dry during winter.

• Fertilization: During the growing season, a liquid fertilizer for cacti can be applied once a month.

• Flowering: It begins to flower at a young age if provided with good light and a dormant period during the cold season.

• Propagation: It can be propagated from seeds or by separating any basal offsets.
