Cyathea tomentosissima, sometimes found in trade under a shortened or incomplete label, is a compact, rare tree fern native to the humid mountainous regions of New Guinea. In current taxonomy, the accepted name at Kew is Sphaeropteris tomentosissima, but in horticulture it is still very often sold as Cyathea tomentosissima.

It is a spectacular plant, valued for its fine, lacy foliage and its exotic appearance, but more compact than other tree ferns. The leaves form an elegant crown, and the stem and petioles may have decorative reddish-brown hairs. It is ideal for shaded terraces, greenhouses, verandas, or protected corners with good humidity and filtered light. Horticultural sources describe it as a compact species with slower growth than many other tree ferns, also suitable for pot cultivation.

🌱 Botanical characteristics:

  • Family: Cyatheaceae
  • Plant type: decorative tree fern valued for its leaves
  • Habit: vertical, compact, with gradual development of a fibrous trunk
  • Leaves: long, finely divided, very elegant, with an airy and lacy appearance
  • Texture: delicate, sometimes slightly fuzzy on petioles and young parts
  • Overall appearance: tropical, refined, and very decorative, suitable for rare fern collections, greenhouses, and protected spaces.

💧 Growing and care conditions:

  • Light: prefers partial shade, filtered light, or a bright spot without strong direct sun
  • Watering: regular; substrate should be kept moist without prolonged drying
  • Substrate: rich in organic matter, airy and well-drained, but able to retain moisture
  • Humidity: appreciates high atmospheric humidity and an environment protected from very dry air
  • Temperature: optimal growth range: approximately 10-24°C.

Frost tolerance: low; not recommended for permanent outdoor planting in Romania’s climate. It is safest grown in a pot and overwintered in a sheltered, bright space protected from frost.

  • Maintenance: requires protection from wind, severe cold, and dehydration; safer in pots or sheltered spaces during winter.
  • For good development, plant Cyathea tomentosissima in a rich, moist, well-drained substrate, in a place protected from strong direct sun and dry drafts. Constant humidity and a cool environment help maintain its beautiful and healthy foliage.

What makes it special:

  • stands out for its very fine, lace-like foliage
  • has an elegant tropical look but a more compact size
  • is a rare plant sought after by collectors
  • can be grown long-term in pots
  • adds texture and volume to shaded spaces without appearing heavy.

📌 Note: Leaves may show small natural imperfections, slightly marked tips, older leaves partially dried, or fine marks from handling and transport. Depending on the season, the plant may have mature leaves, developing leaves, or may start growth more slowly. These aspects are normal for a tree fern and do not affect the plant’s viability.

Frost tolerance: low; consulted commercial sources describe it as a species with limited cold resistance or recommended for protected overwintering. For Romania, the safest option is pot cultivation and overwintering in a sheltered, bright space protected from frost.
