Alocasia gageana ‘California’ is an impressive tropical plant, noted for its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that bring an exotic and lush atmosphere to indoor spaces. This variety is more compact and easier to maintain compared to other Alocasia species, making it ideal for plant lovers seeking a striking tropical decor. Its leaves have a vibrant shade of green, and the petioles are strong and thick, supporting the massive leaves.

Care

1. Light

It prefers strong indirect light, which mimics the natural conditions under the canopy of tropical forests.

Can tolerate medium light, but direct sun exposure can burn the leaves.

In low light spaces, growth may slow down and leaves may become smaller.

2. Temperature

Thrives best at temperatures between 18-26°C.

Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C or cold drafts.

It is sensitive to sudden temperature changes.

3. Humidity

Prefers an environment with moderate to high humidity (above 50%).

In dry air conditions, periodically mist the leaves with water or use a humidifier.

Avoid overwatering the leaves, as it can promote spots or mold.

4. Watering

Water the plant when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch.

Keep the soil slightly moist but not soaked, as roots can rot from excess water.

Reduce watering in the cold season when the plant enters a slower growth phase.

5. Soil

Needs well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

A mix for tropical plants, combined with perlite or bark, is ideal to ensure drainage.

6. Fertilization

Fertilize the plant once a month during the active growing period (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer for foliage plants.

Fertilizing is not necessary during winter.

7. Repotting

Repot the plant every 1-2 years or when the roots have filled the pot.

Use a larger pot and fresh soil to support growth.

8. Pruning and maintenance

Remove dry or yellowing leaves to encourage healthy growth.

Wipe the leaves periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain a glossy appearance.

9. Common problems

Yellowing leaves: May be a sign of overwatering or underwatering.

Dry edges: Indicates low humidity or lack of watering.

Pests: It can be attacked by red spider mites, aphids, or scale insects. Inspect the plant periodically and treat with an insecticide if necessary.

Note: Alocasia is a sensitive plant. Therefore, you may receive these plants with some leaf defects, but these do not affect the plant's viability.
