A highly renowned multispecific hybrid, for which both experienced collectors and amateurs show special interest, Phalaenopsis Mini Mark, created by Breckingridge in 1992, impresses with small to medium-sized flowers, predominantly white, sprinkled with delicate orange freckles arranged relatively radially, in tone with the orange-carmine colored labellum. The parental species of Mini Mark are Phal. philipppinensis (50%), Phal. maculata (25%), and Phal. lobii (25%), the latter two botanical species forming the hybrid known as Phal. Micro Nova, created in 1980. The leaves of this hybrid have medium dimensions, about 10 – 15 cm long, arranged alternately, and multiple flower spikes emerge from the internodal spaces, which can bloom at any time of the year, although flower appearance is usually associated with the autumn – spring period, especially between November and March. The flowering is long-lasting, with flowers persisting for at least 3 months.

The light radiation requirements of this hybrid are permissive, as Phalaenopsis Mini Mark can be successfully grown both in strong diffuse light and in partial shade conditions. In general, the plants can be placed without problems on window sills, regardless of their orientation. However, on extremely hot days of the summer season, it is recommended to protect plants positioned in southern and western exposures by placing them behind a curtain. Depending on the intensity of direct light exposure, various sunburns of different severity levels may appear.
The thermal values belong to the warm range, as Mini Mark requires growth temperatures between 18 – 30 – 32°C, ideally 18 – 21 °C. For the successful cultivation of this taxon in apartment conditions, it is necessary that nighttime temperatures be at least 3 – 4 °C lower than daytime temperatures, a difference that naturally occurs in homes.
Optimal humidity should be between 50 – 70%, as at lower values most plants will slow growth, branching and flower stem development will stagnate, and eventually, plants will abort buds and incompletely opened flowers. In this regard, it is recommended that at growth temperatures above 25°C, the atmospheric humidity level should be increased proportionally.
Remarkable about this spectacular hybrid is that it can be successfully grown both in pots with substrate and mounted on wooden plaques. The preferred substrate consists of mixtures of conifer bark with sphagnum moss or just pure sphagnum moss, to which charcoal can be added, which is especially useful for maintaining root development and preventing rot at the root system level.
Changing the substrate is recommended every 2 – 3 years, as following frequent irrigations and fertilizations, the substrate will degrade quickly and compact, no longer being loose and thus hindering air circulation. Substrate compaction leads to root suffocation, which once dead can no longer supply the necessary amounts of water and nutrients, thus leading to plant degradation and death.
The optimal time for transplanting is the period immediately after flowering, avoiding this operation as much as possible in the cold season. Transplanting before flowering is not recommended, as it is very likely that the plant will lose flowers, and the developing flower stems will stagnate.
Irrigations will be uniform throughout the year, with a frequency that must be determined according to the environment and cultivation method. Excess water must be able to drain without obstacles, as water stagnation both in the pot and in trays can lead to rapid degradation of the root system. It is recommended to allow the substrate to dry between waterings, and to check its drying in depth, not just the top layer. For the warm season, spraying water on the leaves is recommended to increase air humidity. Fertilizations will be done once every 2 weeks, at concentrations of 25 – 50% of the doses indicated by the manufacturer. This hybrid does not require rest periods to stimulate flowering.
